Description

Israeli Sculpture: Moses with the two tablets. (Ceramic figure)

This contemporary Israeli sculpture depicts Moses with the two tablets of the Law. I made this as a second version of a previous ceramic Moses figure. Both of these figures have a similar stance; both standing upright, holding the two massive stone tablets, and staring impassively into the distance (or into eternity if you want to be grandiose). It is this aspect – namely their kingly, Pharaonic stance – that reflected, in my mind, the ancient Egyptian sculptures. The Egyptian association, of course, fits well with the figure of Moses, emerging, as he did, out of Egyptian royalty.

In these Moses figures, I was trying to capture a sense of monumentality. For me that means that the sculpture, while measuring only a foot or so in height, could equally well hold its own if imagined as a very large sculpture indeed. Hopefully I’ve succeeded in this, and thereby also in conveying something of the power and eternal significance of Moses as a leader, and emissary of the Divine.

This sculpture could be a companion piece to a King David seated figure (available to commission).

(For further reference: Powerful ancient Egyptian sculpted figures that I referenced in a general way were King Men-Kau-Re and a Queen).
