Original naive art piece.
This is a portrait of Jacob’s marriage to Leah, showing Rachel sneaking off mischievously in the background. I wanted to make this scene both intimate and humorous. It’s the moment before Yaakov realizes he’s just married Rachel’s older sister. As with the Toldot picture, I’ve made the tent sumptuously decorated and richly coloured. This is less an evocation of reality, than a way of reflecting the richness and depth to be found in the Torah itself…..
