Beit El: Heaven and Earth

angels ascending and descending, in the dream of Jacob's ladder

A new visual presentation at the visitor’s centre at Beit El in Samaria will be using my Jacob’s Ladder painting, among works by many other artists, including several very famous ones, I think. I’ll post pictures, and maybe video, of the actual thing when they have the opening (not sure when that’ll be)! Beit El […]

Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob's Ladder (detail): A painting by Darius Gilmont showing angels ascending and descending.

Between Heaven and Earth I made this painting a couple of years ago, shortly after finishing the Daniel painting. Inspired by the angel from that project, I wanted to experiment a bit more with angels, which is a difficult subject. The story of Jacob’s Ladder is about the bridge between heaven and earth so in […]

On the theme of Daniel: Experimenting with different colours and forms

Contemporary Biblical Painting, Daniel in the Lions' Den, Contemporary Biblical Art

This is a contemporary Biblical painting on the theme of Daniel in the Lions’ Den. It is acrylic on canvas, with applied gold leaf, and measures 80cm x 80cm. The angels are depicted as ethereal globules of colour, but I’m not too happy with this treatment. Considering making some changes – I’ll post an update […]

Pilgrimage painting

Contemporary Biblical Art. Landscape painting with desert valley at dawn. Pilgrimage to holy river. Twelve tribes

Pilgrimage: A Biblical Painting This imaginary Biblical painting tells a story: Once a year, pilgrims visit this most secret and sacred valley of the desert, where veins of gold run through the rock, symbolizing eternal wisdom and the divine (אלוקות). Each of the Twelve Tribes is represented, wearing variations of their tribal colours and, between […]

New archaeological art: Mini-reliefs under way

I’m currently working on these two small relief sculptures in clay. Shown here before firing and before colouring, they will eventually be terracotta red clay, with colour and gold leaf applied. Approximately 15cm wide, they are intended to be wall-hung.

New Black Moses

Biblical sculpture: Moses ceramic sculpture

I’ve just completed a new ancient Biblical sculpture. My New Black Moses stands 31.5cm high and is made of black fired clay with touches of a dark metallic underglaze. The inspiration for this type of formal, standing figure comes from the ancient sculpture of Mesopotamia. The (linked) article from the Metropolitan Museum’s website describes this […]

Finding new life in an old painting – a Biblical scene.

biblical scene - detail 3

The subject is an undefined Biblical scene, in the Land of Israel. Since it is made up of different layers which have accumulated over a few years of painting and re-painting, the canvas itself has started to take on something of an archaeological character. It’s an unresolved picture. I’m aiming to bring it alive now […]

Art gift for Rosh Hashana

This original piece of Jewish art would make a beautiful and very special Rosh Hashana gift, celebrating the seven species described in Parshat Ekev. Prominent among them, in my picture, is the pomegranate. The midrash describes this fruit as having 613 seeds, corresponding to the number of mitzvot in the Torah. This is a decorative […]

Child’s Bible; complete set published

This brings this whole Child’s Bible project to a close, with all five volumes of the Torah series now published. It was a challenge and a privilege to be involved in this work! The whole series is available to buy here. (Available separately or as a boxed set). Prints of the illustrations are available […]

Last picture for Children’s Torah

This is a slice from the last picture I did for the Children’s Torah – Parshat Nitzavim. It’s not the last chronologically, but I didn’t do them in strict number order.
