A beautiful painting by Marc Chagall

This most beautiful, light-filled painting of a sunlit corner of a home (his home?) by Marc Chagall, was painted in 1918. It isn’t as whimsically poetic as the paintings he’s well-known for, but it captures a mood, a moment, and a domestic tranquility. I’ve just dipped into his autobiography, My Life, and am reminded, in his writing, how naturally his strange, imaginative worlds must have emerged onto the canvas…..Here’s an almost random excerpt:

“The dishes on the Day of Atonement, the night before.

An evening of chickens, soup.

Tall candles glow in the distance.

Soon they will be carried to the synagogue.

Those white, well-trimmed candles are already on the way, praying and pleading.”     – from My Life, by Marc Chagall, 1957.
