Ceramic Biblical Art

I really enjoyed making this piece of ceramic Biblical art; a whimsical depiction of a prophet with his cat! For the discerning collector of high-performance Biblical prophets and cats, this must be the sculpture for you! I made it in terracotta clay, firing it with an engobe (matt-finish) glaze. Later I added some acrylic paint for the sky-blue background.

The style of this piece, with its profile walking figure, is meant to evoke the art of Sumer from the days of Abraham. (Abraham himself came from Ur which was a great Sumerian city).

Cats are not mentioned in the Torah – don’t forget they were venerated as divine emissaries in ancient Egypt – but Islamic tradition gives Muhammad a pet cat!
