Mediterranean Balcony Garden: A quick acrylic sketch

Mediterranean Balcony Garden, plein-air painting in acrylic, "After Rain," showing geraniums, bougainvillea, blue sky, white buildings, rain reflections on terrace.

This is a painting I made last Friday during a break in the wonderful torrential rain. It shows our Mediterranean balcony garden with rain reflections on the terrace. Unlike most of my work, I finished it in a couple of hours, and it’s a plein-air painting – painted in front of the “motif.” I haven’t done such work in many years, so I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. In the end I was pretty pleased. The composition, the colours and the feel of it all seem to hang together quite well. Apart from some initial frustration at the sketch stage, I enjoyed the experience. I loved that I could finish a painting in only two or three hours. Now I’m looking forward to doing some more.

You can read more about my art on my “about” page.

Here’s another balcony painting I made – a night-time view.

If you’re interesting in reading more about Mediterranean balcony gardening, the excellent Mediterranean Garden Society, based in Greece, has some good resources about container-planting for the Mediterranean climate.

And here’s a detail of the geraniums on our balcony, at the right side of the painting, from a different time (this last summer) and a different angle. I hope to post further photos and paintings of our Mediterranean balcony garden soon.
