Description

A Contemporary Biblical Art Piece

This is a work of contemporary Biblical art showing Moses on Mount Sinai, surrounded by a swirling colourful aura. It’s an original oil painting. I was inspired to create this work by an abstract painting I glimpsed in someone’s house while out walking the dog. The picture was a blur of shapes and colour and most probably was an abstract work. In my mind I saw it as the form of Moses. Later, I sketched and painted it exactly as I imagined it. The swirling sky emerged during the creative process. This divine energy is shown flowing out of Moses’ head and courses throughout the painting, connecting him with heaven and earth.

My artwork for Parshat Yitro was influenced by this painting, both in the swirling sky and in the use of colour.

It came to pass on the third day when it was morning, that there were thunder claps and lightning flashes, and a thick cloud was upon the mountain, and a very powerful blast of a shofar. The entire nation that was in the camp shuddered. Moses brought the people out toward God from the camp, and they stood at the bottom of the mountain. And the entire Mount Sinai smoked because the Lord had descended upon it in fire, and its smoke ascended like the smoke of the kiln, and the entire mountain quaked violently. The sound of the shofar grew increasingly stronger; Moses would speak and God would answer him with a voice…. – Exodus Ch 19

A main theme of this painting, the Ten Commandments, are explained very thoroughly on the amazingly extensive Chabad website here.

I don’t normally feel comfortable in front of the camera talking about my work but I made this quick video (below) explaining the way this painting came into being. I hope you find it interesting!
