Description

The sandy-beige MGB GT custom car portrait above shows the car, registration number VMD 733G, with dark red leather interior and white piping on the seats and door panels. This 1968 MG belonged to my uncle and was a familiar automotive presence throughout my childhood. I also drove it for a few months when I was in my twenties, just before it was sold. You can read a full description with background story about the car and some photographs on my blog here.

The dark green example shown above is a recently completed portrait of a dark green 1967 MGB roadster.

An excellent “Harry’s Garage” review of a very rare, beautifully kept MGB GT from 1966, (a video by Harry Metcalfe) can be found here.

My earliest passions were cars and drawing. I was always drawing cars throughout my childhood, creating my own designs, as well as copying photographs from Motor Sport magazine. I loved the sculptural quality of cars, and the unique character of each one. Because of this, I would draw my favourite cars again and again. The forms and colours were irresistible to me, and compulsively engaging. You can see a car’s character, for instance, in the expressive volumes of its bodywork. Its stance on the wheels, the wheels themselves and even its ‘face’ – all these tell a story. Like a person, a car has its own character, and I’m now rediscovering the challenge of capturing this character in my artwork.

A custom car portrait can be a wonderful gift. Do get in touch if you’d be interested!
