There’s often a sense of urgency, and excitement, about getting to shul on a Friday evening, and always a sense of competition about who’s more committed religiously. It’s this atmosphere that I’m trying to convey in this humorous look at the religious life. I think that the guy in front is particularly keen to beat the others, either to prove to himself that he’s still as fit as he was, or to prove to the others that he’s the most pious.
