Old Testament Biblical art: The Book of Exodus

The narrative of Exodus is so vivid and easily lends itself to visual representation. Throughout the history of Old Testament Biblical art, the Book of Exodus has been depicted the most often. Scenes like the Crossing of the Red Sea, Moses with the Ten Commandments, and the Golden Calf have been rendered in endless variations through the centuries.

Examples that always made the most powerful impression on me as a child were the engravings of Gustave Doré (1832-1883). These finely-drawn images are beautifully drawn, and convey the feeling of a constant and heroic struggle against an ominous haunted darkness which constantly seems to threaten. This struggle is the essence of the Old Testament, as well as of all human endeavour. It is the struggle of light against darkness and of love against hate and is as relevant today as it has always been.

Here is an interesting article from the Jerusalem Post about archaeological clues to the Exodus. Among other theories, it mentions the traditional Egyptian battle-shrine as a possible model for the Mishkan (Holy Sanctuary of the Israelites).
